Nathan Phillips Square is becoming a centre of Filipino culture this weekend as the Mabuhay Philippines Festival returns for its 27th edition.
The free festival takes place today, August 22, and Sunday, August 23, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. It offers Filipino Canadians and visitors an opportunity to experience the food, creativity and traditions of the Philippines in the heart of downtown Toronto.
Filipino talent takes centre stage
This year’s featured guests include Filipino actress Janine Gutierrez, who is scheduled to appear on Saturday, and Apl.de.Ap of the Grammy Award winning Black Eyed Peas, who is expected to headline the festival on Sunday.
Their appearances bring international attention to a program that also celebrates Filipino Canadian performers, artists, designers, entrepreneurs and community groups.
Visitors can expect live music, cultural performances, a Filipino drag showcase and a fashion presentation hosted by designer Aandrei David.
Filipino visual art will also be featured through work connected with OCAD University and members of the Philippine Artists Group. Together, these presentations show how Filipino culture continues to grow through both traditional and contemporary forms of expression.
A taste of the Philippines
Food remains one of the festival’s biggest attractions.
More than 50 vendors are expected to participate, offering Filipino street food, traditional dishes, desserts, baked goods and modern interpretations of familiar favourites.
Toronto restaurant BB’s, which has received recognition from the Michelin Guide, will also present a special culinary and entertainment experience.
For many visitors, sharing Filipino food is about more than discovering new flavours. It can bring back memories of family gatherings, childhood celebrations and meals shared with relatives in the Philippines.
